Do I have insomnia or is this a really good song?

I think I have an unhealthy sleep cycle.
What I mean is, when I'm stressed I go about my day in a normal way and go to bed when I feel tired, but then I wake up between 02:00 and 03:00 and start scrolling through social media, then the next thing I know over two hours are gone. I close my eyes, but before I can even take a deep breath it's time to get up for work. And the pattern continues for a few days in that week.

It's not sustainable, and I should probably see someone about it. But there is one good thing that comes out of it: I use the time to look at all the tweets and videos that I wasn't able to open on work internet. Not that I don't already use work internet for my own things sometimes.

Anyway. Listening to music on YouTube in the middle of the night like that recently gave me the opportunity to discover a few new songs. New, of course, only to me, because I am not the mixtape and download fiend I used to be two or three years ago. Now, I just sort of listen to whatever is on TRACE or on the radio.

Okay, but all of this is beside the point. The point is: I really like Ella Mai's music! She's from London, and I think I have written about her somewhere before. I first discovered her on "She Don't" with Ty Dolla $ign two years ago. I loved her voice and the clever lyrics. Ella was the new "modern R&B" singer I was looking for. The other songs off her mixtape didn't disappoint. They were not all bops like "She Don't", but they showed her solid vocals and made it clear that she was one to watch.

So, in the early hours of a recent public holiday, I was on YouTube watching something else when I saw a video of hers in the list of suggested things to watch. I was immediately intrigued.

Within the first six seconds of "Boo'd Up", I was sold. It has this distinctive 90s R&B feel to it: the music just sounds smooth and warm like it could easily be part of a mixtape by Brandy or En Vogue. 30 seconds into the song, I was already dancing along and when the chorus kicked in I was ready to profess my love to someone. And that's what "Boo'd Up" is about: realising that you've found someone who twists you up in all the right ways and wanting them to know that they've got you open.

In other words, my favourite type of song. I love pretending that I have found the perfect lover and friend who has changed my life for the better. It's why I like Whitney Houston and Tamia so much.

What I like especially about "Boo'd Up" is how happy hearing it makes me. I played the song maybe three times in a row that first night, and I couldn't get over the cute adlib in the chorus. It reminded me a lot of Rihanna on "If it's lovin' that you want", which is also a really good song. Underrated from her discography, as far as I'm concerned. But Rihanna is a story for another day.

For now, let us all enjoy the laid-back, summertime lovin', cool R&B songstress vibes of Ella Mai on "Boo'd Up". It is from her Ready mixtape which is about a year old now, but that doesn't change the fact that I am seriously considering buying it. In fact, I have already bought this single.

And I haven't spent money on music in a long, long time.
